SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Abdool S. Akhran Scholarship: For graduate students studying Public Administration,
(governmental) accounting, finance, or comparable program. ($2500)
Government Finance Professional Development Scholarship: For full-time
government employees pursuing a degree in Public Administration, (governmental)
accounting, finance, or comparable program. ($1500)
Future Leaders in Finance Scholarship: For graduating high school seniors, from the
District of Columbia, accepted into an accredited U.S. university or college. ($1000)
GFOA-WMA Scholarship Submission Guidelines
Each applicant must submit the following documents:
1. Proof of Enrollment/Transcript:
enrollment status. For high school seniors, proof of enrollment must be received
by August 2025 to receive the award.
2. 3-5-Minute Video:

Discuss the role of government finance in addressing a current societal
challenge (e.g., climate change, affordable housing, or education). How
do you envision your future career contributing to solving these issues?
Government Finance Professional Development
Scholarship Prompt:
"Innovation in Public Finance"
Identify a recent technological advancement in public finance and explain how it could improve efficiency
and transparency in government operations.
Future Leaders In Finance
Scholarship Prompt:
“The Future of Public Financial Leadership"
Strong leadership is essential in managing government resources effectively. What qualities and skills do you think are necessary for the next generation of financial leaders in government, and how do you plan to develop those traits?
Video Submission Instructions:
Upload your video to YouTube as an unlisted or private video.
Include a link to the video in your submission materials.
Make sure the video remains accessible for the review committee during
the entire selection process.
3. Cover Letter:
Your cover letter should include the following:
Full name
Mailing address
Cellphone number
Email address
Name of high school/university and the program you're enrolled in
4. Submission Instructions:
All required materials (proof of enrollment/transcript, video URL, and cover letter)
must be sent in one email.
The subject line of the email should be formatted as:
"Scholarship Application: [Your Name]";
Email your complete submission to [Scholarship Committee Email] by 5pm
EST, November 15, 2024
5. Selection Criteria:
The review committee will evaluate submissions based on:
Content Quality: How well the video addresses the prompt and reflects
on public finance solutions.
Presentation: The clarity, engagement, and professionalism of the video.
Academic Merit: Strength of the academic transcript or proof of
enrollment.
Overall Application Completeness: Ensuring all required materials are
submitted in full and on time.
6. Important Deadlines:
The final submission deadline is 5pm EST, November 15, 2024. Late or
incomplete applications will not be considered.
7. Notification:
Finalists will be notified by email by December 5, 2024.

Nominations may be made by any GFOA-WMA member (self-nomination is permitted)

Award recipients will be announced at the annual year-end conference held annually in November or December.
This Award will be made as approved by the GFOA-WMA Board and may not be awarded on an annual basis. Self nomination is not permitted. The GFOA-WMA's distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award in Government Finance recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions throughout their careers to the practice of government finance that exemplify outstanding financial management and who have also made significant contributions of time or other support to the GFOA-WMA
